JAGGERY
Jaggery, popularly is a natural sweetener that is becoming a
popular healthy alternative to sugar. It is a form of unrefined sugar
and a healthier alternative to white sugar.
Various types of jaggery are available in the market that vary in
colour, ranging from golden brown to dark brown, But our product
known as Marayoor Jaggery is of dark brown colour because of it is
made purely without adding any chemical ingredients.
A product of such cultivation is a replacement of sugar worldwide and is used in
confectionery, medicines, beverages, ayurveda and in several day to day life
activities. The world-famous delicacy is called “Marayur Jaggery” where Marayur is
a place situated in the Idukki district of Kerala around 5200 ft high from sea level. Jaggery is the term for
dark brown sugar balls made of condensed sugar cane juice. Jaggery is an naturally
made important food, recognized in Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medical system,
for its many benefits
The peculiar geographical location of Marayoor, which nestles amid the forests of the
Western Ghats gives the sugar cane a distinct geographical identity. Added to this, the age
old specialized skill of the local people in making the jiggery in the farm itself, make it a
unique product. It is therefore in great demand in households across the country for the
preparation of sweet dishes.
The major agriculture here is sugarcane. Since it is cultivated in the hilly areas and is grown up in
fog and yawning rain and wind, high quality delicious yield obtains from the agriculture. The jaggery
is produced from the sugar cane adopting the technology, which has 400 years of traditional
background. Hence there will be no taste of salt or cyst. Moreover the original taste of sugarcane can
be maintained. Based on the quality of the jaggery , Kerala Agricultural University has announced
them with Geographical Indication Patent.
Marayoor Sarkara or Marayoor Jaggery is known to be one of the sweetest jaggery available in India
